We like to stay busy and take in as much as we can- this trip was no exception. We packed up our car after work, on a Friday night, for a last-minute adventure to head to the Nahanni Range Road.

Camping season has officially begun in the Yukon. We weren’t able to go camping on opening weekend, so this past weekend was our season opener. With the Crane and Sheep Festival going on in Faro from May 7-9, we decided Faro would be our destination.

Hiking in the Yukon is not just a summer activity. Many trails throughout the territory can be hiked year-round (with the proper knowledge, equipment and ability) and Spirit Canyon is one of them. Located less than 60 km from Downtown Whitehorse -not only is it easy to get to, it’s also a hike the whole family can do.

There’s a saying here in the Yukon that until you have lived a whole year in the Yukon, you are a Cheechako. Once you have survived all four seasons in the territory, you are now called a Sourdough.

With the snow still on the ground and Ground Hog day not that long ago, it has me thinking about wildflowers of the Yukon. One of the amazing things about the Yukon is it seems to always be blooming- when there isn’t snow. The Yukon is home to more than 1250 species of flowering plants! Here’s a look at some of the common wildflowers you may see on your journeys throughout our colourful territory.

Coffee is important for a lot of people and there are no shortages of coffee roasters in town. Skip going to Starbucks or Timmies for your double-double and try one of the independent coffee shops that will serve up a hot cup of locally roasted Joe or buy a bag of beans and make it yourself. Here are a few of the roasters in town that make a variety of heaven for your mug.

We love adventure, so what is more adventurous than leaving Canada’s capital in our all-wheel-drive vehicle that’s stuffed so full of our belongings and our two trusty canine companions during winter? Nothing! Like many before us, we came from Ontario -and like a lot of them, we too came for “just one year”.

Living in the Yukon can be a challenge- even when COVID-19 isn’t throwing a wrench in our plans. With the minimal sun and chillier weather sometimes it’s a struggle to get out and about- so pull on your layers, fill your thermos with some hot cocoa and give these activities a whirl.
